Happy Engineer's Day What is Civil Engineering? Can we imagine the World without Civil engineering?

Why is 15th september celebrated as Engineer's Day?

It's a day of achievement of the first civil engineer of India Sir Mokshgundam Vishweshwarayya ., As a chief engineer under which construction of *Krishna raja sagar* Dam ,karnataka and *flood management system* established in Hyderabad. And it was one of the largest dam in india with dimensions having height of 39.8m and length about 2.6 km for the purpose of power generation , irrigation and water supply .And the nature of the DAM was ^Gravity dam^ which was constructed across the KAVERI River . 15th September is the birthday of the great Engineer of India Sir M Visveswaraya. The day is celebrated as Engineers day in India inorder to honor his achievements. Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya KCIE FASc, more commonly known as Sir MV (15 September 1860-14 April 1962), was an Indian civil engineer. He was a statesman and the 19th Diwan of Mysore who served from 1912 to 1919. He received India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1955. For his contributions to the public good, he was knighted as a Knight Commander of the British Empire (KCIE) by King George V.

In his memory, his birthday, 15th September, is celebrated as Engineers Day in India, Tanzania and Sri Lanka. He was the Chief Engineer of Krishna Raja Sagara dam located in the north-west suburb of the city of Mysuru. He also served as a Chief Engineer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad.

 What is Civil Engineering...........

Engineers play a vital role in the development of a nation. Different parts of the country celebrate Engineer's Day to appreciate the contribution of engineers.

India observes Engineer's Day on September 15 as a mark of remembrance and tribute to Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, who is considered as one of the greatest engineers in the country. Vishveshvarya is also known as the father of Indian Engineering because of his enormous contributions and innovations in the field of engineering and development of society. India has been celebrating Visvesvaraya's birth anniversary as Engineer's Day since 1968.

What is Civil Engineering…. As a Civil Engineer I feel, I may justify it to some extent writing about this field of Engineering. Can we imagine a world without buildings, bridges, dams, roads, airports, railways and various other structures??? I think we can’t!! Actually, it seems insane to imagine a place like mars, jupiter which is just a vacant land.

Civil Engineering is one of the oldest professional engineering discipline, dealing with the design, construction and maintenance of the structures built with a keen interest of not causing any damage to the natural environment.

So, to make the world a better place to live, love and let live, Civil Engineering is the profession which transforms imagination into reality. The creativity & imagination of the architect is successfully built up by the Civil Engineers, starting from excavating the hard rock strata to construct underground structures like tunnels to building world’s tallest skyscraper, Burj Khalifa which is 828m high. Civil engineering is traditionally broken into a number of sub-disciplines. It is considered the second-oldest engineering discipline after military engineering, and it is defined to distinguish non-military engineering from military engineering. Civil engineering takes place in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies. The built environment encompasses much of what defines modern civilization. Buildings and bridges are often the first constructions that come to mind, as they are the most conspicuous creations of structural engineering, one of civil engineering's major sub-disciplines. Roads, railroads, subway systems, and airports are designed by transportation engineers, another category of civil engineering. And then there are the less visible creations of civil engineers. Every time you open a water faucet, you expect water to come out, without thinking that civil engineers made it possible. New York City has one of the world’s most impressive water supply systems, receiving billions of gallons of high-quality water from the Catskills over one hundred miles away. Similarly, not many people seem to worry about what happens to the water after it has served its purposes. The old civil engineering discipline of sanitary engineering has evolved into modern environmental engineering of such significance that most academic departments have changed their names to civil and environmental engineering.

I am proud to say, I am a part of one of the Oldest Engineering discipline in the World. It is as old as our Civilization, when people for the first time placed a roof over their head and started living in permanent settlements.

MYTHOLOGY

In India we believe that Lord Brahma created this Universe.

God Vishwakarma is known to be divine engineer and architect. He created Dwarka for Lord Krishna, Lanka where Ravana ruled, Maya Sabha of the Pandavas. He is worshiped by architectural and engineering community on 16thSeptember every year, even by other communities and professionals, for better future and success in their respective fields.

HISTORY

Ancient Civil Engineering

Around 3000 to 4000 BC – Indus Valley Civilization in India Pyramids in Egypt and Mesopotamia of Iraq.

In between 500 BC – 500 AD Stupas of India and Srilanka, Great Wall of China, Parthenon by Iktinos in Greece. Romans contributed a lot as they built roads, dams, bridges, aqueducts, harbors and many civil structures such as Colosseum in Rome, Pont du Gard aqueduct, Temple of Claudius, Tomb on the ancient Appian Way etc.,

Modern Civil Engineering

In the 18th Century, the term Civil Engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to Military Engineering. The first self-proclaimed Civil Engineer was John Smeaton, who constructed the Eddystone Lighthouse (1756-1759). He is also called Father of Civil Engineering.

In India Engineers Day is celebrated in the name of Sir. M.Visvesvaraya.…a Civil Engineer.

Few great Civil Engineering works include the Krishna Raja Sagar Dam (Sir . M.Visvesvaraya), Eiffel Tower (Gustave Eiffel), Golden Gate Bridge (Joseph Straus and Charles Ellis), Hoover Dam (John L.Savage).

In Recent Times , we can see the world has changed drastically, with the help of new technologies and we are building structures that were only dreamt of. .We have built many skyscrapers such as Willis Tower (United States ),Taipei 101 (Taipei), Shanghai Tower ( China) ,Petronas Twin Tower ( Malaysia ) , Burj Khalifa ( UAE ) ..Under construction project of Jeddah Tower (UAE) which is 1000m (1Km - planned) tall building.

India is also in this race of building skyscrapers, Imperial Towers (Mumbai), Ahuja Towers (Mumbai),Raheja Towers (Gurgaon) .Few under construction projects are, World One(117 storey in Mumbai) ,Three Sixty West Towers(85 & 53 storey in Mumbai) , Supernova(80 storey) by Supertech in Noida.

WHAT A CIVIL ENGINEER DOES

Civil Engineers construct, design, supervise, operate and maintains large construction projects and systems, including high-rise buildings, metro and mono railways subway station ,roads, harbors, airports, tunnels, bridges, dams, sewage and water supply system.

Civil Engineers shape the history of nations around the world. You can’t imagine life without the contributions of Civil Engineers to maintain the standard of living, safety and public health.

Civil Engineers work closely with other professionals, such as architects, consultants, contractors, suppliers for their project. Handle various site activities, such as earth moving, excavation, steel structures, rcc structural works, brick work, plaster work and number of finishing item activities. Mostly they look after part of plumbing, electrical, ac (vrv and hvac) works. Different types of field and lab testing for the reliability and durability of structure and materials. Working with softwares for planning ,design and billing activities at office, and other various type of documentations, paper works.etc.,

Civil engineering is an exciting profession because at the end of the day you can see the results of your work.

CIVIL ENGINEERING JOBS AND SALARIES

At present environment jobs have dried up , construction industry is dying a slow death, almost no new project is launched . No funds for running ongoing projects and handing over is delayed. Developers are opting for solvency, so very few new jobs are there and even trimming and layoffs is going on in various organizations. There are few hopes in Infrastructure and Government jobs.

When there are limited jobs then where the question of salary is, Companies are negotiating to a maximum limit, even not ready to pay according to your present salary else negotiated with a nominal hike.

FUTURE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Civil Engineering will be the most demanding sector in India. If we want to grow, want to be one of the top economies, want to compete with China, USA and other developed countries of the world our infrastructure has to grow. We are far behind, we are a developing nation, to become a developed country Infrastructure is one of most important parameter. All the developed countries have restructured their infrastructure. We can see China, in last 3 decades they built huge infrastructure, wide roads, metro trains, bullet trains, airports, sea ports for better connectivity. Skyscrapers, well built and planned cities, restructured old cities with better amenities.

There is huge potential of growth for a Civil Engineer in India. It is the second largest industry of our country after agriculture also contributing a large percentage to the national economy. Construction industry gives livelihood to many semi-skilled and unskilled laborers; around 10 % of India population depends on this sector. The Construction Industry everywhere faces challenges and problems it is also evident that the problems have become greater in extent and severity in recent years. If rules and regulations are implemented effectively, labour laws are stringent, policies are in support for the growth of the industry, Funds / loans are easily available to the companies. RERA and GST havoc is absorbed by construction industry. Thing may again be on track .there will be jobs, there will be new project launches, project will be handed over on time.

If Smart City concept of our Government commence in the same way as it is talked about , then my friends you will see the re-carnation of our construction industry very soon……

There are some wonderful, specific and natural things that only a experienced civil engineer might know.

House, Road, Water, River, Drain is essential necessities of individual. Structural designer essentially manages it. Along these lines, it is an immediate association.

Presently your inquiry is extremely short. It needs elaboration. And still, at the end of the day, expecting certain boundaries, I might want to offer response due to my work and experience. In this way, it may not completely mirror the perspectives yet positively will give you a major part.

Structural architects needs to manage individuals, both at upper level just as lower level. Difficult exercise is the craft of structural designers. We make a task. While making, we manage project worker, works and so forth At the point when venture is on skirt of culmination, we manage customers that is large individuals or target clients a few times. While making street project, we need to manage individuals who have lost the land and are not happy with remuneration or pay has been given to wrong individuals because of wrong land records.

Most likely how structures and scaffolds can flop fundamentally, and how much passing and wounds that this can cause. Without becoming excessively specialized for the benefits of the inquiry, the investigation of break mechanics and elements or the science behind how designs fizzle, break, and twist, is a truly captivating forte of CE. The Minneapolis Bridge Collapse a couple of years prior, the shocking fall of WTC on 9/11, and the beginning of break mechanics, the breaking of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia.

Likewise numerous CE's know the science about what a great many people have pondered about however never thought about in current life, similar to why traffic reinforcements on the interstate of a significant city can occur in a Sunday drive.

It is an extraordinary field of designing to get into, and has a great deal of useful applications for individuals, on the off chance that I wasn't seeking after Electrical and Robotics, I couldn't want anything more than to get into Structural.

Assuming we are Civil designers, we should see to that how our schooling is useful towards fostering our country and getting along great to individuals.

Thus, Especially affable specialists should know how

1. To ensure the climate

2. To advance tidiness

3. To advance security

4. To save lives

5. To give safe drinking water

6. To create irrigational framework thusly creates agribusiness

7. To foster water conveyance format for a town or city

8. To fabricate modest houses for needy individuals

9. To comprehend the ground water level and soil layers

10. To do medical aid

11. To fabricate transitory designs like tent, houses for animals, igloo development and so forth

12. To introduce and fabricate sun based force and wind power

13. To propose miniature supplements for ranchers ie., which harvest is appropriate for which soil( soil testing, perception of natural substance)

14. Land recovery

15.to utilize an Alternative to waterway sand

16. To regard trees( arranging information for arranging of street arrangement or any without inciting cutting of trees)

In this way, there is no fixed inverse gathering. We must be watchful in our conduct and keep persistence in managing individuals from various range.

Thus, thoughtful designing is fundamentally half designing and half friendly designing. It is not the same as other designing. I realize that sand trap, which is dreaded in light of the fact that nothing emerges from it alive, is certainly not a sort of sand yet a water powered condition, normally saw in sands.

The lower portions of soil anyplace is typically soaked with ground water. Since the voids between the dirt grains are little, a portion of this water ascends because of slender activity. This water applies a vertical pressing factor. This vertical pressing factor, if sufficiently huge, can counteract the opposition (load bearing limit, in specialized terms) of soil. Which implies, in the event that you step on the dirt it can't take the heap. Successfully, it acts actually like water. So you sink. Which is the thing that occurs in a sand trap.

Presently the intriguing part. Like I said, sand trap behaves like water. Which implies, since your thickness is not as much as soil, you can glide in it on the off chance that you make little developments, like swimming. Indeed, you can swim in a sand trap and not pass on. A great many people and creatures battle in alarm, get worn out and in the end sink. So on the off chance that you go close to a sand trap (ideally not) or fall in one unintentionally (ideally not), recollect not to freeze. It could save your life.

Presently, about the classification. It's sand trap since, similar to I said, this condition is generally seen in sands. The other sort of soils, the dirts, have another property, called union. Union is the fascination between the dirt particles which holds the particles unequivocally enough that sand trap condition can't happen.

Expectation this is as much fascinating to somebody for what it's worth to me. Good health.

It doesn't mean if one has studied/is studying might be knowing all the important aspects of this field. It (civil engineering) is the great in itself and people like me are the explorer of this beautiful art. I am going to share pictures of my field experience of past few years. It was great time. Recently I captured some laboratory pictures of Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Project (Bullet Train) Laboratory pictures.
As well as Field

Among thousand and thousand students very few are titled as civil engineers. In becoming a civil engineer one requires particular set Of skills. Skills that he/she acquires over a very long time of learning, hardwork and practice.
