What is the best thing about United States when compared to the rest of world?
I'd like to add these to answers already given:
1. Law & Order: being of Indian origin, this seems to be the most glaring and obvious plus. You can go anywhere - almost, at anytime of day and night without fear of getting mugged or killed. You can talk to any policeman/woman without fear of reprisals, even if asking directions. You don't dodge on taxes or have to take/give bribes to survive.
2. Meritocracy: Of course there're bigots who'll profile you, colleges will have preferences for children of alumni, and you'd be misunderstood. By and large, you'll succeed because of what you have to offer, however, regardless of who you are and/or where you are from. Most have a rags-to-riches story to tell, themselves.
3. Justice: In general, Americans have a sense of justice, especially for the underdog. They'll help you if you're treated unfairly.
4. Optimism: Americans are optimists and feel bad things are just a bump on the road of life. You are allowed second chances and if you repent, you're forgiven. In addition, you carry no baggage of your parents or other ancestors; you're taken for what you are, what you've accomplished, and what you can do.
5. First Amendment: Americans seriously believe this. You have a right to criticize anything without being ostracized. Only country where you can burn the flag without being arrested. However, many of them are idiots who misread the Second Amendment and want to break the wall between Church-State to create a theocracy.
6. Politeness: Americans are friendly people, especially in the South. Smiling at strangers and acknowledging them is norm, unless you're from either coast, especially the NorthEast.
*UPDATE* Few things I failed to mention, and don't see anyone else doing so:
7. Women's Rights: Although one can argue that they're better in some other nations, the fact is that in the fuller scheme of things, American women have one of the best freedoms anywhere. Yes, there's still a glass-ceiling, and there hasn't been a female President yet, but the rate of change in women empowerment has been impressive.
8. No baggage: A hallmark of American culture is that you are what you are, irrespective of your ancestry. It is one of the only countries where you have a second chance to redo your life over again. It is a typical asset of a newly immigrant nation, where everything is left back 'home' and you get to start anew.
9. Openness: partly stemming from the above point, Americans are open to new ideas, and aren't very bothered to hack the old ones. Economically, it has benefited because it spawns a culture of entrepreneurship and progress is made socially - like the recent tide of acceptance of homosexuality.
