Some unknown facts about Vetren singer Lata mangeshkar......... Using the pseudonym Anandghan, which means “cloud of joy” in Marathi, Lata Mangeshkar has composed music for four Marathi films in the 1960s: Mohityanchi Manjula (1963), Maratha Tituka Melvava (1964), Sadhi Manasa (1965) and Tambadi Mati (1969).

In the year 1938, she sang publicly for first time at the age of nine at the Nutan Theatre, Sholapur. She sang two Marathi songs and Raag Khambawati.

In the year 1948, her voice was rejected by producer Sashadhar Mukherjee for being too thin. However, Ghulam Haider who recommended Lata to Sashadhar was quite annoyed at this and responded saying that in the coming years directors and producers would fall at Lata’s feet and beg her to sing in their movies.

She was trained in Indian vocal classical under Ustad Amanat Ali Khan from the Patiala gharana. But after he migrated to Pakistan post-Partition, Lataji continued her training under Amanat Khan Devaswale.

Although Lata didi started her career in 1942 with the song 'Mata Ek Sapoot Ki Duniya Badal De Tu' in a Marathi film named Gajaabhaau, her first major break was with the song 'Dil Mera Toda, Mujhe Kahin Ka Na Chhora' for the film Majboor in 1948.

She became famous with the hit song from Mahal (1949) – “Aayega Aanewaala” – where she playbacked for actress Madhubala. However, the Gramophone Company Of India did not gave her the credit for the song since she was not popular at that time. But Madhubala was so impressed with her that she used to put in all her film contracts that Lataji will sing all her songs.

In the year 1962, she was hospitalised and had a close shave with death as she was given slow poison by someone. She only began to recover after 10 days and was bedridden for nearly 3 months. The mystery has not been solved till date, however, proofs pointed at her cook who mysteriously and suddenly vanished without even taking his wages

And it was in 1958 that Filmfare awarded the first female playback singer award. She was the first Indian singer to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London in 1974.

In 1990, the Lataji launched her own production house with Lekin, directed by Gulzar. She sang Yaara seeli seeli in the film, which fetched her another National Award.

Her family's last name used to be Hardikar; but her father Deenanath changed it to Mangeshkar in order to identify his family with his native town, Mangeshi in Goa.

Lata Mangeshkar’s mother Shevanti was the daughter of a Gujarati businessman, Seth Haridas Ramdas Lad, the most prosperous businessman and landlord of Thalner; and Mangeshkar learnt Gujarati folk songs such as garbas of Pavagadh from her maternal grandmother.

Vasant Joglekar gave her the first chance to sing in his Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal” in 1942. However, the song “Naachu Yaa Gade, Khelu Saari Mani Haus Bhaari” was dropped from the film.
