Why didn't the lockdown work so well in the US, while it was effective in other places?

Because you only half-assed it. It was not so much a lockdown but a “lockdown unless you really don’t feel like it”. Too many people considered their personal freedom too important to be able to bother about the health and life of others. In other countries people simply stayed at home. In the US right wingers protested against being asked to stay at home by screaming at police officers right in the face, of course not wearing masks.

The problem is a twisted understanding of freedom. Everywhere else it’s like Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. said: “My right to swing my fist ends where your nose begins.” In Trumpistan it’s “I’m free, fuck everybody else.” That’s no proper basis for fighting a pandemic.
