Fact 1: Mitra robot is a product of a very diverse team that comes from across the country (with an occasional intern or two from overseas). Our team speaks 12 languages representing regions like Ladakh, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bengal, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra, Telangana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
The men and women of Invento come from orthodox Hindu, Christian, Muslim families as well as those from irreligious, secular families. It is a mini India.
Fact #2: Our engineers include both conventional toppers like the ones we pick from the campus placements at IIT Kanpur, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Raipur etc as well as unconventional stars.
One of our star electronics engineers is a girl whose mother tried to get her to work as a maid at our place after her 12th grade. Our team found her engineering talent, coached her and she is doing strong practical engineering besides doing a B. Tech in parallel. Another one is a 8th grade dropout who made his living working as a watchmen in two houses. He is now a solid engineer building top notch products. Both these are barely 20 and already made enough money to pay for all their elder sister’s wedding.
Another one comes from Kargil in Ladakh, raised by a single mother in a harsh environment. In months of joining at Invento, he saved enough to pay for his sister’s wedding. Another one [whom the team nickname Bruce Lee] was dehusking coconuts in his village — about 150 a day. Now, he is supporting his entire family from his earnings. They are all solid engineers. One of the maverick electronics engineers could never get used to low-end call centre sector jobs and kept hopping jobs for 6 years, before finding his passion at Invento sticking for 4 years.
Mitra is the story of all these amazing people coming together to build great things and have fun in the process.
Fact #3: Even the media that typically hate India have written glowing stories on the Mitra. This is probably the one time in recent past when CNN, BBC and Guardian have done positive stories related to India.
We are now getting into top talk shows in the US where no Indian company has ever been talked about. We now export high end hardware to advanced economies.
We have no real background — most of our team members are from lower middle class, poor families — and come from random villages. And we have built from scratch with very little investment, braving all the trolls.
Built by these little people, our robots never ceases to amaze the people in Europe, USA and Japan. We have partnerships with leading global engineering companies such as Bosch, Kone and Accenture.
We got admitted into the prestigious quasi government body — Society of Indian Defense Manufacturers and have a couple of proposals in works.
Swiss government has put a program where they select their top students in robotics and send to us for internship paying most of the costs(Social Robots | swissnex India). We are among the 10 odd companies in the world where such top students from the country get their hardware exposure.
We have gotten consul representatives from Netherlands, Belgium, US and Malaysia come to our office to ask us to setup our R&D facilities in their countries.
Here is the take from the India’s most respected tech leader/investor who headed Google for South Asia.
