What is a show that you liked that was cancelled quickly?

My all-time favorite show, HBO’s Rome… the friendship of Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus was a thing of absolute beauty. Their conflicting personalities, the banter, the adventures of them running around in the last days of the Republic like some sort of ancient Forest Gumps… oh, it was amazing. I loved that show. Loved it to bits, and I can still recommend anyone from seeing it.

Even if your interest in history, or Roman history to be exact, is only passing, it’s still just so incredibly fun! Not to mention the part when young Octavian is introduced… you know, the man who will one day be the great Emperor Augustus? He’s in there, too. Awfully clever kid, but awfully unaware of the real world, or women, or relationships, or fighting… so one of our legionaire friends is hired to teach the boy.

The show has Caesar, old and young. It has a more historically accurate Cleopatra — young and alluring, but not super beautiful, and kind of odd at times. It also has a LOT of minorities, there’s Jews, there’s Greeks, Africans, Germanics, there’s uprisings, there’s historical campaigns. Marc Anthony, of course, in all his glory. The tragic Brutus, amazingly portrayed in a way that makes him almost sympathetic, his actions understandable…

No, I’m not about to claim it’s the most historically accurate show of all times. And in some scenes, there’s quite a bit of ‘artistic freedom’ to fill in the gaps of what we know and don’t know. Overall, however, it is amazingly put-together, well-made, wonderfully cast and skillfully acted. The scenery is spectacular, the storylines woven together brilliantly and the intrigue juicy, tension always palpable… you watch that show, you smell the streets of Rome, the scent of a lavender-drenched high-end whorehouse…

Rome went way over budget. It was supposed to be multiple seasons but got only two, with the second season making a lot of large leaps in time to bring the epic tale to a premature end… and it’s still good. Beginning to end. A must-watch that I wish could have lasted longer.
