Why was Jason Momoa struggling to find work after his role on Game of Thrones?

He’s a decent enough actor, Jason Momoa. A supremely chill human being, and quite easy on the eyes, too. But above all, he’s an absolute behemoth of a man. Six-foot-four and what, 250 pounds or more? Into weightlifting, rockclimbing… Momoa’s career got a major boost from GoT and he seemed to really go places.

But there’s this guy, David Benioff. He’s one of the two producers of the show, which makes him Momoa’s boss. He loves hanging out with the actors and actresses, with writer George R.R. Martin himself, and of course, Momoa being one of the actors, got to hang out with Benioff too. At some point David and Jason get drunk, and played a game, ingeniously called “the slap game”.

What got into Benioff that night, I have no clue… maybe being around all the beefcake actors had the guy feeling like he was a big bad man, too. Maybe going to the gym once a week had him feeling like the Hulk. Either way, he’s a mouse compared to Momoa. But he challenges the big feller.

The game involves slapping one another’s hand. And the slaps get harder and harder. And then eventually, one of the guys is supposed to give up. Only Benioff didn’t back down. If you beat the Khal, you’re the new Khal, right? Right…

David Benioff never backed down. Brave, but not very smart. Momoa warned him, tried to take it easy. But Benioff ended up breaking his hand and having to go to the hospital. No ill feelings, at least that’s the official story. But like his boss’ knuckles, Momoa’s career kinda… died for a little while…
