How does Israel get water?

Israel is situated on the edge of dry arid regions to its East and South. Rain falls in the winter and spring months (roughly November till April) and the amount of rain varies greatly from year to year and from region to region.

Therefore, Israel found many innovative ways to ensure enough water for agriculture, industry and of course for human consumption.

From the JNF-KKL’s website: Israel’s Fourth Aquifer.

“Israel’s sources of water include underground water from the mountain and coastal plain aquifers, ground water from Lake Kinneret, rivers, lakes, floodwaters and now, water reservoirs. Underground water is the largest reserve of water in the country. Approximately two-thirds of the water in Israel originates from underground water that remains stored naturally underground and is pumped from wells or springs”.

In addition, Israel is one of the world’s leaders in purifying and recycling sewage and drainage water for agricultural purposes. Israel recycles up to 90% of its wastewater (see here: Israel Leads World in Water Recycling Drinking water is also obtained by desalination plants that desalinate water from the Mediterranean Sea.
