Some people in Hollywood married for over 50 years? How? Why?

James Garner & Lois Clarke

They married just two weeks after meeting each other in August 1956 and stayed married until his death in 2014. Garner said: "Marriage is like the Army; everyone complains, but you'd be surprised at the large number of people who re-enlist."

Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward

The poster couple for marital longevity were married for exactly 50 years until Paul Newman died of lung cancer in 2008. He famously said “I don't like to discuss my marriage, but I will tell you something which may sound corny but which happens to be true. I have steak at home. Why should I go out for hamburger?”

Jerry Stiller & Anne Meara

Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara were married for over 60 years, from 1954 until her death in 2015. "Anne is very forgiving. She doesn't care about money, being rich, or clothes. We never argued about finances."

Jessica Tandy & Hume Cronyn

Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy were married for over 50 years, from 1942 until Tandy's death in 1994. After her death, he said “I’ve had a bad time, which we won’t dwell on. We were married and we worked together for 52 years, and suddenly with her gone I was a quadriplegic. Slowly I’m crawling back.”

Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis

Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis were married for 57 years, from 1948 until Davis's death in 2005. They were both personal friends of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. and were heavily involved in the civil rights movement. In their autobiography, they said “Sex is fine, but love is better. That’s the most important part of being free.”[1]

With the above couples and many more like them, there is no secret formula to how they stayed together for so long and others didn’t. Perhaps, at the core of it is that they lived in simpler times when marriage was a lot less complicated than it has become now.
