WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2023

Theme: ‘Beat Plastic Pollution.’

World Environment Day, also unofficially called Eco Day or Environment Day, is held on June 5th each year. it is organized by UN Environment Programme (UNEP) for the United Nations as an awareness day to highlight the protection and health of the environment as a major concern which affects the well-being of peoples and economic development throughout the world, and to encourage worldwide action for the protection and preservation of the environment for the present and future generations.

The first ever proposal for a conference to the UN was made way back in 1968 by Sweden. And in 1969, the UN agreed that after 3 years they would have a conference in Sweden that would focus on environmental issues. Note worthy enough, the conference was led by Maurice Strong, a Canadian diplomat who worked in the oil and mineral industry, and had a soft spot for the environment.

The year 1972 marked a turning point in the development of international environmental politics when world leaders came together after 4 years of preparations for the first major conference on environmental issues, known as the Conference on the Human Environment, or the Stockholm Conference. With $30,000,000 thereafter mobilized, World Environment Day (WED) was therein established by the General Assembly later that year on 15 December by its resolution A/RES/2994 (XXVII)), designating June 5 as World Environment Day, making it a global platform for public outreach, but was first celebrated in 1974 with the slogan “Only One Earth,” thus marking this year as its 50th anniversary.

From the above, the concern for the environment dates back several decades, with 143 countries currently taking part in World Environment Day, and participants ranging from governments and the organizations in the United Nations system, Non Governmental Organizations, communities, charities, celebrities and tens of millions of people reaffirming their concern for the preservation and enhancement of the environment. They altogether undertake on that day every year world-wide activities to raise awareness of environmental issues, from littering to climate change, pollution to global warming and sustainable food production to protection of wildlife. The day has grown to be one of the largest global platforms of environmental outreach for deepening environmental awareness over the past five decades.

Every year there is always a fresh cardinal focus for WED, and hosted by a chosen country or Nation. This year's WED is to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire, in partnership with the Netherlands, with the theme, ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’. It spotlights calls for global solutions to combat plastic pollution, as more than 430 million tonnes of plastic is produced worldwide each year, with half of it designed for only once use, out of which, less than 10 per cent is recycled.

About 11 million tonnes of plastic waste flow annually into oceans, and may triple by 2040. With this pollution, more than 800 marine and coastal species are affected through ingestion, entanglement, and other dangers. It is estimated that each person on the planet consumes more than 50,000 plastic particles per year, and even more if inhalation is considered, as micro-plastics which are tiny plastic particles up to 5mm in diameter, find their way into food, water and air. There is a stunning estimated 7 million people dying each year from causes related to air pollution.

Single-use plastic when discarded or burnt, harms human health and biodiversity, and pollutes the ecosystem from mountain tops to the ocean floor, with an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in lakes, rivers and seas annually. Plastics are the largest, most harmful and persistent fraction of marine litter, accounting for at least 85 per cent of total marine waste. This underscores the importance of this year's World Environment Day in mobilizing transformative action from every part of the world.

The scourge of plastic pollution is a visible threat that impacts every community around the world. In a historic resolution in 2022, 175 UN Member States endorsed the most significant environmental multilateral deal since the Paris accord to end plastic pollution and forge an international legally binding agreement that will be ready by the end of 2024. According to UNEP statement this year, a shift to a circular economy can reduce the volume of plastics entering oceans by over 80 per cent by 2040; reduce virgin plastic production by 55 per cent; save governments US$70 billion by 2040; reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 per cent; and create 700,000 additional jobs – mainly in the global south.

Without action, exposure to air pollution beyond safe guidelines will increase by 50 per cent within the decade, while to keep global warming below 1.5°C this century, we must halve annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Time is running out, and nature is in emergency mode. With available science and solutions to tackle the problem, governments, companies and other stakeholders must scale up and speed actions to solve this crisis. The celebration of this year's WED provides an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion on the control of plastic by individuals, enterprises and communities towards preserving the environment and enhancing human and animal health.
