In a statement released by Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni has handed over the captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja - who has been an integral part of the team since many years.

Defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Thursday have announced that iconic wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni has quit as the captain of the side ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2022.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has handed over the captaincy reins at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to Ravindra Jadeja, ahead of the start of the 15th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The development comes just two days before CSK open their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders in Mumbai in the season opener at Wankhede Stadium. Dhoni, who was bought as the icon player by CSK in the inaugural season in 2008, has led CSK to 4 titles in the 12 seasons that he has led the team. Under Dhoni, CSK established themselves as the most consistent franchise in the league, qualifying for the play-offs every season barring one.

In a big development, MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings captaincy to all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja - who was expected to take over the role in the next few years. Jadeja has honed his skills under Dhoni's captaincy since joining the franchise in 2012 and is currently one of the premier all-rounders in world cricket. Jadeja is only the third cricketer after Dhoni and Suresh Raina to become CSK's captain. MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team. Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK. Dhoni will continue to represent Chennai Super Kings this season and beyond," said a statement from the franchise.

Dhoni, who had been the captain of CSK since the inception of the league in 2008, had already retired from international cricket in August 2020. Under his captaincy, Chennai won the IPL trophy in 2010, 2011, 2018 and 2021 apart from winning two now-defunct Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014.

CSK will open their IPL 2022 campaign against two-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders in a re-match of the 2021 IPL final at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

"MS Dhoni has decided to hand over the leadership of Chennai Super Kings and picked Ravindra Jadeja to lead the team.," stated an official CSK release. "Jadeja, who has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2012, will only be the third player to lead CSK
