Why has the Kardashians reality show finished? Whose decision was it?

Kris Jenner and each of her pretty, but vapid and cosmetically enhanced daughters will say the show was stopped “because they are tired of it and want to move on their lives”. They will say it was their choice to end it, that they are simply done with living in the spotlight. This is posturing, plain and simple. They are stopping, not because they’re tired of doing the show, but because humanity is tired of watching it.

None of these people is particularly interesting. The women look okay, some of them were in fact stunningly gorgeous in their younger years, but decades of botox and being plastered in layers of make-up so thick a Jackson Pollock painting would envy them have made them look more like animated Shrek side characters than actual human beings. It’s a modern day freak show. And every single one of the Kardashians has become a parody of herself by now. Kris Jenner is sort of a genius for getting people hyped up over her brood of exceptionally mediocre children not doing a single interesting thing for fourteen years straight.

The show gave them enormous exposure into mainstream media. It made them the ‘talk of town’ for what feels like ages, and made them all fabulously rich. They built an empire on a foundation of utter meaninglessness — which is impressive in itself, but also something that people were bound to sooner or later get tired of. That time has come now, and given the fact that it was a show about as warm and emotionally deep as the inner life of Christian Bale’s character in American Psycho, it’s remarkable that it lasted as long as it did until steadily falling ratings would be their undoing.

“Keeping up with the Kardashians” is stopping after fourteen years because no one has to watch a show to ‘keep up’ with who is pregnant, who had a nipslip or who cheated on whom with which actor or NBA player… it’s all leaked in the media by the girls themselves or their mother, so why bother airing a whole show about it as well?
