In order from most to least, which heroes does Thanos respect?

For my list, I will only list the heroes Thanos interacted with.

8: Hulk

Thanos’ interactions with the Hulk likely didn’t leave him with much respect for the green monster. To Thanos, Hulk was just a amateur warrior with big muscles and no intelligence.

7: Thor

Sure, Thanos might respect Thor’s pure power, but that’s not what really earns Thanos’ respect. In Thanos’ eyes, Thor made a lot of mistakes. For one thing, he let revenge fuel him. A noble warrior like Thanos doesn’t deal in revenge. Thor also allowed his pride to cloud his judgement and went for the chest to brag about his win. That’s something Thanos would never respect, which is why he happily beat him.

6: Scarlet Witch

Destroying an Infinity Stone is in itself hugely impressive. But holding off a Mad Titan with 5 Infinity Stones and destroying an Infinity Stone simultaneously is just insane. Thanos may not respect power on its own, but he does respect her power combined with her love. That’s why she ranks above Thor on this list.

5: Captain America

Even if it was just a brief moment, Cap holding back Thanos’ hands was truly an achievement. Thanos had 5 Infinity Stones, and was stronger than the Hulk (resting strength that is)! Only Steve’s unbelievable perseverance and fortitude could do that. And those are exactly the kind of qualities Thanos appreciates.

4: Star-Lord

Keep in mind, Thanos wasn’t awake for Star-Lord’s mental breakdown, so that doesn’t factor into his respect for Quill. It’s also not Peter’s love for Gamora that sets him apart. It was his willingness to kill Gamora. It’s one thing to die for the person you love, it’s a whole other thing to be willing to kill the person you love when necessary. Thanos recognizes that, and even acknowledges Quill, saying: “I like him.”

3: Doctor Strange

To be honest, Doctor Strange’s fight with Thanos is one of my favorite moments in the entire MCU. He demonstrates a brilliant use of his powers and an expert strategy. I’m sure Thanos was equally impressed. Doctor Strange also made the appropriate call when Tony’s life was on the line. Being willing to make those tough decisions is something Thanos respects.

2: Iron Man

Almost as cool as Doctor Strange’s Thanos fight was Iron Man’s. He showed us all the unbelievable capabilities of his Bleeding Edge armor. To Thanos, he demonstrated spur-of-the-moment strategic attacks that actually drew blood from the Mad Titan. He also showed he wasn’t fighting for himself, but for the people he cared about. And he had no fear for Thanos, another thing Thanos respects.

1: Gamora

Thanos had respect for Gamora since the day he met her. Even though she was only a child, she was fearless, and brave even after her Mother disappeared. As she got older, she impressed Thanos with her skill and dedication, plus her loyalty. True, she eventually betrayed him, but that proved she wasn’t blindly loyal to him.

However, what really sets Gamora apart was the scene when she thought she had killed Thanos. It was clear she didn’t want to, that she still loved her adopted father, but she did not let her love stop her from doing what needed to be done.

That’s exactly what Thanos respects the most. To him, more important than love and people is the willingness to sacrifice anything for your cause. Gamora proved she is capable of that.

That’s why she tops the list, not only does Thanos love Gamora the most, he also respects her the most.
