From what I’ve read, when Diana died, Prince William and Prince Harry both were asked to choose something fo their mother’s jewelry to remember her by. Prince William chose Diana’s Cartier watch, since he must've associated that beautiful watch with his mum.
When Prince Harry chose an item, he picked her sapphire and diamond engagement ring. Everyone will remember that huge ring a smiling shy Di sported right after she became engaged to Prince Charles.
But the brothers had a pact between them. Whichever brother married first would take Diana’s engagement ring and use that to propose to his intended future wife. They both agreed with this. Her ring was made of a Ceylon sapphire that was 12 carats surrounded by twelve diamonds. When asked why she chose that ring over all the others Prince Charles had shown her, Diana honestly answered, she simply chose the biggest ring available. So cute!
It turned out that even though Prince William waited until he was almost 29, he was the first brother to become engaged. Harry happily gave up the beautiful sapphire ring, and a beaming Catherine Middleton wore that ring on the day she and Prince William announced their engagement. That occurred in November of 2010.
The couple wed in a beautiful wedding ceremony at Westminster Abbey, and Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge proudly wears Diana’s old engagement ring on her ring finger. It’s still hard to miss. Plus Catherine wears a wedding ring made of rare Welsh gold. And Prince Harry still had more jewels to chose from since Diana left them to both sons.
When Prince Harry asked Meghan Markle to marry him, he found a huge diamond from Botswana, which is where they fell in love together on a week-long camping trip. And then Harry made Diana a part of his wedding day by having two diamonds from Diana’s collection, set beside the large three-carat cushion-cut center diamond.
Prince Harry selflessly gave that ring to Prince William. He said the woman sitting on the Throne one day should be the woman to wear their mum’s beautiful engagement ring. I hope Harry was given the opportunity to choose a different ring or necklace when he gave his moments from Diana away.
When I saw Meghan wearing Diana’s beautiful aquamarine ring, I wondered if maybe Prince Harry had been allowed to choose that for his future wife, though I have not seen the ring since their wedding day. The aquamarine ring is 30 carats, so yeah, it’s hard to miss.
I just read the huge blue ring, which I think is stunning, was a wedding gift from Harry to Meghan. So Meghan does have the gorgeous aquamarine ring in her collection now. I hope she wears it out more, since that is my personal favorite ring I’ve ever seen. Diamond rings included. Plus Diana bought that ring when her divorce became final. What a statement piece, right?
