Why is Kevin Feige recasting Magneto and Professor X when Fassbender and McAvoy were brilliant in their roles? Why not incorporate them into the MCU?

Retaining them is not worth the trouble. For a couple of reasons.

If the X-Men franchise was consistently successful and had garnered nothing but goodwill over the past two decades, then perhaps retaining the actors might have been a possibility.

However, of all the wonderful qualities the X-Men franchise possesses, consistency isn't one of them.

Moreover, now, after the once-in-a-decade disaster that was Dark Phoenix, Marvel would want to distance itself as much as possible from the X-Men franchise as it exists now.

Truth be told, they had assembled quite a cast. The Big 4 of the X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence are not only charismatic stars but outstanding actors as well.

They've got seven Academy Award nominations between themselves. It would have been a joy to see them strut their stuff in the MCU.

Now, even if this were a possibility, how do they come in? Fox has made sure that the X-Men timeline is an absolute mess.

This is Michael Fassbender in X-Men First Class, set in 1962; he’s supposed to be around 32 years of age here.

Also, this is him in Dark Phoenix, set in 1992; he’s supposed to be 62 here.

Michael Fassbender is a gifted actor, and he gave one of the best performances in the entire franchise in First Class, but even he can’t pull this off.

This is just an example of how Fox has been playing fast and loose with the timeline. Why would Marvel want any part of this mess?

Having said that, it’s highly unlikely Marvel will find better actors than McAvoy and Fassbender to play their respective parts.

At its peak, the X-Men franchise allowed these actors to do what they do best- act, which might sound obvious, but it isn’t always the case in comic-book movies.

The “point between rage and serenity” scene in First Class where Erik moves the satellite is a masterclass.

It’s something you won’t find in every movie in the genre because most of them are loath to ‘slow down.’ There’s a box to tick with every scene.

However, the genius of Kevin Feige and Sarah Finn, the MCU’s casting director, lies in the fact while they are unlikely to find better actors, they will almost certainly find the right actors.

In Sarah we trust.

They are likely to retain Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool though. Why?

Because Reynolds is Deadpool. There is no other actor on the planet that can play that part the way he does.
