How can a vegetarian survive in Japan?

I won't lie or give you false hopes, it indeed is hard!

According to a research around 4.7% people in Japan are vegetarian and 2.1% people are vegans. In an average amount, 5.9% people are vegetarians and vegans including.

My sister has spent a lot of time in Japan and so I had to call her to dig about this. According to her experience in Japan, most of the people you'll cross path with are mostly non vegetarians.

Now, my sister is a non vegetarian but there, she mostly munched on vegetarian there. The main reason to this is - they eat raw fish ‘cause fish there is so fresh. As an indian, she was also hesitated to consume that and so preferred vegetarian anyway.

Now, coming to food part, it isn't impossible to find it there. It will surely take you some time to adapt yourself but once you get into the flow, there won't be any problem.

If you live in or somewhere near Tokya, it would be easy for you. In Tokya, there are around 100 or more vegetarian and vegan restaurants including some indian restaurants only. So, it would be easy for you.

If you live near Harajuku or Aoyama, its easy peasy there. There are lots of vegans and vegetarian restaurants there.

For other parts, you need to ask and dig a bit. There must be some such restaurant in any part of the city.

If you find such a restaurant, take a monthly subscription and you're ready to go! Or if you're a visitor, you can jump in that every time you need to eat something. Yum!!


If you live alone in Japan, then you can Eat Shojin Ryori in Temples.

It's a special meal prepared for Buddhists monks in Japan.


If not, then you need to go some hardwork.

Some vegetarian dish you can easily find there are -

Tempura

It is basically a deeply fried vegetable!

You can easily find these in restaurants in Japan. So, that would be an easy job to do.

Tsukemono

It is like a pickle in japan which is made from Veges. So, you can have easy access to them.

Zaru Soba.

It is buckwheat made noodles served with soya sauce.

Ramen

Lots of shops in Japan also offer vegetable Ramen with green spring onion and other veges. So you can check them out.

Miso Soup

It is available in both veg and non veg side. Veg one contains tofu and other vegetables.

Japanese style vegetarian curry

A basic view of japanese vegetarian food.

Brown rice is easily available in Japan and best for vegans and vegetarians. Tofu karaage is like tofu pakoda. Miso soup is a soup including vegetables and tofu. Achar as I told.

Tofu is the best option to go for. Vegetables are another go to dish. Brown and white rice are easily available.

Mushrooms are wisely available so you can try them out.

All in one, it can be a little tricky but you can find your way out.

If you have to live there for months or for your life long then, COOK!

Vegetables are easily available in supermarkets. You can buy it from there and cook. Tofu is easily available and is one of the main dishes there. So, you can easily create recipes from it.

Brown rice is to be found at every nook and corner.
