Why is it that people say that an MBA degree is not of much use if it is not from an IIM?

This is absolute nonsense. IIMs especially the top 6 are excellent institutions, though there are over 30 other exceptional B-Schools in India.

Less than 20% of CEOs from Top 100 companies in India are from IIMs. So clearly if they were soo good then they should have garnered at least 50% of the CEO positions in India. So 80%+ CEOs come from B-schools other than IIMs.

I know of several IIM graduates who have been absolute failures and could not survive in the competitive world of business and ended up becoming teachers or joining CAT coaching centres. So please remove this notion that IIMs are the end all and be all of management.

With all due humility I want to submit, that I am not from an IIM but was able to go ahead of MBA graduates from Top B-schools in the world like Harvard, Wharton, Stanford, Oxford etc. It is not how you start the game but how you finish the game. The value you deliver to your organisation will result in your rise and not your IIM tag.

From an international perspective, i can tell you that one of our students who got an IIM-B offer letter left to join Universal Business School as the PGDM was not recognized as a legitimate Degree by his company and they funded his education only because he got an MBA Degree from a reputed International University and he ended up getting a Rs.1 crore salary. This example clearly states that a quality student will get an amazing package in any good b-school not necessaily an IIM.

It is the quality of the student that makes the B-school and gives it an amazing reputation, not vice versa. I can challenge that if anygood b-school gets IIM quality students, they would do an equally amazing job.

In fact a Board Member of IIM-Ahmedabad once commented to me, that the IIMs have their head in the ground and are not changing at the pace required. They will get extinct and any B-school could beat them as their decision making is so slow as government needs to be brought on board and there is very little autonomy.

Thanks........
