I keep reading this (some have excellent specificity) but ever a name attached to the test. As a consumer I have very little or choice. I had an antibody test drawn labcorp today and asked the question. They had no answer, and couldn’t tell me which test they are using.
There have also been some recently encouraging reports from the interferon-beta studies. But we don't have a full picture of those data yet. We have learned that it is possible to prevent large scale outbreaks if appropriate public health measures are in place. These measures include testing and contact tracing, isolation and quarantine, social distancing, hand hygiene and masks. As someone who took care of patients in NYC since March, we've DEFINITELY learned a lot.
We're putting people on mechanical ventilators less. Proning (turning patients over) has been helpful as well. Now we have a few treatments - remdesivir and steroids - that help too!
My 02 sat was 56 with pneumonia 4 years ago and I only had an oxygen mask + antibiotics + cortisone. Seemed I was a goner but out of hospital in a week. I PRONATED MYSELF! It seemed logical. Q3: We can learn about the strength of antibodies formed in #COVID19 survivors, whether they're effective therapeutically, & if they can be used to make drugs (e.g. monoclonal antibodies). Others include steroids, remdesivir, immunomodulators.
COVID patients develop antibodies (proteins to fight infections). Liquid part of blood is called convalescent plasma. It’s an experimental Rx used for severe #COVID19. Researchers hope convalescent plasma can boost ability to fight.
Ques. Are there any sound antibody tests out there yet? It seems as though there are a number of pharmaceutical companies in the race to get this right. Where are we at and who is leading the way?
Ans. There are antibody tests with high specificity (ie: low rate of false positives). Check with your provider which test they are using and ask them about the specificity. You want to take an antibody test with specificity >99% (<1% of positive results are false).
Thanks for Reading🙏
