Believe it or not, there’s a bright side here.
It’s true, many Trump supporters have claimed that these are staged riots and ANTIFA is responsible for the government coup. Needless to say, there’s no evidence to back that up. Heck, it’s not even ANTIFA’s fashion style.
But…do you catch the underlying message? By shifting blame, these Trump supporters are admitting that this is a grievous crime. Nobody would shift blame unless they believe what they are being accused of is serious.
I find that interesting because I’ve seen a lot of people circulating the “45% of Trump supporters support the riots” statistic.
I don’t buy that. I’m inclined to believe either the wording confused people or the sample poorly represented conservatives as a whole. After all, every person who believes ANTIFA was responsible for the riots must therefore disapprove of the riots. You’re telling me the ANTIFA-theory supporters plus the people who entirely disapprove of the act and blame nobody but Trump… is barely a majority?
I’ve written multiple answers on the subject already and been harshly critical of the attack and of Trump. I’ve received a lot of frustrating comments, but I have yet to get a single comment that says they support the coup. Not a single comment.
Obviously, my own sample is not perfect, but that’s still out of 500+ comments.
Anyway, back to the question.
Trump supporters claim ANTIFA was responsible because they don’t want to believe fellow Trump supporters would do something so despicable. They know this is domestic terrorism, they know that it’s a betrayal of the country, they know this is the opposite of patriotism. They just don’t want to admit it’s from their own side.
And if we’re being honest, they are not the first group to blame ANTIFA for violent protests done in their name.
Regardless, it’s a ridiculous conspiracy theory. But at least it means they recognize the riots for what they were. Domestic terrorism.
EDIT: Folks, we did it. I got my first comment in support of the riots. I guess that makes it 1/600 or so now.
