Warning — Imma rant out my rantiest rant here.
[1] Scripture is not a defence for bigotry:
- You believe that homosexuality is sinful because your scripture told you so?
- You believe that women should submit to their husbands because your scripture told you so?
Listen carefully when I say with all due respect—
Verses quoted from any religious text— do not make your bigoted views any less bigoted.
If anything — the fact that you can not contextualize your beloved little book in a relevant contemporary reference frame, makes me question your intellect and cognition.
[2] ‘Because, traditions’ — is NOT an argument:
- Respect the traditions that have stood the test of time
What test? What makes you think that ‘time’ has an obligation to ‘test’ social customs?
Did you know that the inhumane widow-burning practice known as Suttee was prevalent in India for 2000 years? That’s a humongous amount of time! Clearly, standing in 1820, a legit argument could have been —
The tradition of burning widows alive on the blazing pile of pyrewood stood the test of time. Thus, we should not question it.
Guess what? This is the exact argument that was made back in the early 1800s’ India, by conservatives like Radhakanta Deb.
Yes, I can extrapolate my rhetoric from 1820s’ widows in India, to 1910s’ American women wanting to vote, to 2000s’ women in Saudi Arabia (who just wanted to drive cars) to — almost anywhere in the world.
Even, the conservative ‘tradition’ of monogamous marriage— has been the dominant institution for a few hundred years, only. If we go back a few thousand years — we will see everything ranging from ‘communal marriage’ to ‘harem’-s. The beloved tradition of Monogamous Marriage — became dominant, became the norm, became tradition, because someone questioned and challenged some existing traditions back then.
Traditions change. Traditions, sometimes, get obsolete too.
[3] Victimhood Culture — Walk your goddamn talk :
‘Oppression olympics are insufferable’- you screamed at the top of your voice.
I concur.
But …
But the moment you begin formulating the rhetoric of—
- ‘straight men/upper-class men/white men are the real victims’,
- Christians are the real oppressed’ ,
- ‘masculinity is stigmatized/shamed’—
you are simply auditioning for — ‘America’s Next Most Oppressed, Season 7’.
You want to complain about the victimhood culture?
Learn to walk your talk first.
[4] Facts don’t care about — any feeling (including faith):
Never ever ever use the ‘facts don’t care’ ... argument. In any context whatsoever.
I am saying this with all due respect.
The faith that you hold so dear to yourself — (even though I respect it) — in my view is nothing but a feeling. Will you be able to handle it, if I use your insufferably dismissive ‘facts don’t care’ — argument against your feelings (i.e. faith)?
Your faith— albeit being a feeling in my eyes— I believe, is extremely important.
Your feelings (including the religious ones) are valid.
So are mine. Deal with it.
[5] Anti-Science conspiracy theories — are almost entirely Right-wing things:
From arbit anti-science jargons like — ‘abortion causes breast cancer’, to ‘evolution denial’ to ‘climate-change denial’ — American political right’s philosophy is the cornucopia of anti science conspiracy theories.
No wonder scientists stay away from them.
[6] Violence — is a right-wing trait:
Yes. Antifa is objectively bad and I agree. Yet, Antifa has killed precisely zero people.
While … the fringes of the political right.. well, I will let the data speak for itself.
Facts or stats … don’t lie.
Okay Done. Rant over.
