What do buffets put in their food to make you full?

Question: -What do buffets put in their food to make you full?

Answer: -Note that most buffets, do not put anything harmful or dangerous in the food, at least not the good reputed buffets. Yet, that being known, buffets add small quantities of baking soda in the food. This is mainly done because buffets need to produce large quantities of food and thus baking soda enables quicker preparation of large quantities of food. Some dishes may have a bit more baking soda than others. This causes us to feel full even if we have consumed less from the buffet.

Another point is that buffet restaurants tend to offer sugary beverages, complementary bread, naan, etc. that naturally has the ability of filling a person up and making them feel full thus causing them to leave without consuming much of the higher value food like main course, curries, good appetizers and they will end up consuming some small appetizers at the best.

Here are some tips that I personally follow and thus recommend when going to buffet restaurants to get the best experiences:

  1. Do not consume any food before hand, particularly heavy meals or even moderate things as it will end up filling the person. Keep an appetite before going to a buffet restaurant.
  2. Request the restaurant to not provide any sugary beverages and any fillers such as bread or naan and ask them to take it away. The reason is that flour based food and sugary beverages can eliminate the appetite as they release a huge shot of carbohydrates that will instantly raise the energy levels.
  3. Do not end up munching on large quantities of small appetizers, rather request for the better appetizers. The reason is that all the appetizers contain a bit of baking soda and that can end up filling the person quickly and eliminating the appetite. Therefore, it is pragmatic to specify the exact appetizers you want and request that the others need not be served. Even if you wish to try other ones, you can take small quantities for trying them but save the space for your favorite appetizers
  4. Then take a variety of dishes from the main course and have the full experience. This is where you can get a good experience of the buffet.
  5. Take smaller quantities of rice based dishes and consume more of curries and others so as to prevent the loss of appetite. Do not make the mistake of filling up the plate with a mountain of rice.

Bon Appetit!
